2023 Honda XL750 Transalp Review – The Ultimate Adventure Bike On and Off the Road

The highly anticipated Honda XL750 Transalp is making a comeback, and I had the opportunity to test this middle-weight adventure bike both on and off the road. Join me and let us delve into the exciting features and performance of the 2023 Transalp.

Introduction to the 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp

I first caught a glimpse of the all-new Honda XL750 Transalp at the EICMA event in November 2022. However, the keen eye of a photographer spotted it even earlier while Honda was capturing promotional pictures. The Transalp and its sibling, the 2023 Honda CB750 Hornet, immediately caught my attention with their impressive specifications and sleek design.

Compared to its competitors, the XL750 Transalp is lighter, boasts competitive power output, and comes with an affordable price tag that surprised even the most devoted Suzuki fans. I previously had the pleasure of testing the CB750 Hornet and was impressed by its dynamic handling and energetic performance. So, when the invitation to experience the Transalp arrived, I couldn't have been more thrilled.

Introducing the 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp

The 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp is not simply a Hornet with extended suspension for off-road adventures. It features a significantly different frame, with a sturdier front end and a new, longer, and stronger sub-frame at the rear. In fact, the only shared component between the two bikes is the engine, and perhaps the headlight borrowed from a previous model. The new frame weighs an impressive 18.3kg, which is 10 percent lighter than the frame of the Honda CB500X. It's worth noting that the CB500X has far less power, torque, and off-road capabilities than this remarkable machine.

Although the Honda XL750 Transalp has a history of pioneering the adventure motorcycle segment, Honda does not position it solely as a full-fledged adventure bike. While it boasts a 21" front wheel, long-travel suspension (200mm front and 190mm rear), 210mm ground clearance, and a custom off-road mode, Honda's launch itinerary indicated that this bike is intended for a mix of on-road and off-road riding. Approximately 80 percent of the ride consisted of on-road riding, with only about 20 percent dedicated to off-road exploration.

Performance of the 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp Engine

Having previously experienced the powerful 750cc 270-degree twin engine in the CB750 Hornet, I had an idea of what to expect from the Transalp. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the distinct characteristics of the engine in the Transalp. The longer intake creates a deeper and richer intake noise while enhancing low-end torque. Honda has also made noteworthy improvements to the ride-by-wire throttle, which is much smoother and more enjoyable compared to its naked sibling. The Transalp's engine delivers an impressive 90bhp and 55lb-ft of torque. Despite its short-stroke architecture, the engine delivers power in a well-balanced manner, thanks to the new mapping and intake system. Whether you prefer an exhilarating race-like experience or enjoy cruising through the low and mid-range revs, the Transalp offers versatility and excitement.

During our test ride, the bikes were equipped with genuine Honda accessories, including an up-and-down shifter and blipper. Shifting through the six-speed gearbox was seamless, and for those who prefer a smoother shift, Shifting through the six-speed gearbox was seamless, and for those who prefer a smoother shift, the up-and-down shifter and blipper add an extra level of convenience and enjoyment. The gear ratios are well-spaced, allowing for easy acceleration on both on-road and off-road terrains.

Riding Experience and Handling

The 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp excels in providing a comfortable and controlled riding experience. The ergonomics are well thought out, with a comfortable seat, an upright riding position, and well-positioned footpegs and handlebars. The windscreen does a decent job of deflecting wind, enhancing rider comfort during longer rides.

On the road, the Transalp offers a smooth and stable ride. The revised suspension setup strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness. It absorbs bumps and imperfections on the road with ease, providing a plush ride even on rough surfaces. The bike feels planted and stable through corners, inspiring confidence in the rider.

When we ventured off-road, the Transalp continued to impress. The long-travel suspension soaked up the bumps and undulations, allowing for confident riding on gravel, dirt, and uneven terrain. The bike felt light and nimble, making it easy to maneuver through off-road obstacles. The off-road mode, which adjusts throttle response and traction control settings, further enhances the bike's off-road capabilities.

Features and Technology

The 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp comes equipped with a range of features and technology to enhance the riding experience. The instrument cluster is a fully digital LCD display that provides clear and easy-to-read information, including speed, RPM, gear position, fuel level, and more. It also includes a fuel consumption meter, a clock, and various trip meters.

The bike features LED lighting all around, providing excellent visibility both during the day and at night. The headlights offer a wide and far-reaching beam, illuminating the road ahead effectively.

One notable feature is the Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), which offers three levels of traction control to suit different riding conditions. The HSTC works seamlessly in the background, providing additional confidence and stability, especially in slippery or unpredictable situations.

The 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp is a versatile and capable adventure bike that excels both on and off the road. With its powerful engine, comfortable ergonomics, and impressive handling, it offers an exhilarating and enjoyable riding experience. Whether you're embarking on a long-distance tour, tackling challenging off-road trails, or simply commuting in the city, the Transalp is a reliable and capable companion.

Price wise in Europe we are looking at around 10,000 euro whereas in my country due to the high registration tax it will sell at around 12,900 euro.

Honda has once again raised the bar in the middle-weight adventure bike segment with the Transalp. The competitive pricing, combined with its performance and features, make it a compelling choice for adventure enthusiasts. If you're in the market for a versatile and adventure-ready motorcycle, the 2023 Honda XL750 Transalp should definitely be on your radar.
