BMW M Turns its Back on Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) - Embracing a New Era

While traditional manual gearboxes still have their loyal enthusiasts, there's no denying the appeal of a well-designed DCT or PDK gearbox for a sports car. Renowned brands like Porsche and Ferrari have long championed the advantages of double-clutch technology in delivering optimal performance.

Surprisingly, BMW has been gradually moving away from DCT transmissions. It began with the previous-generation M5, which returned to a conventional automatic transmission. Subsequently, the latest iterations of the M3, M4, and most recently, the M2 have been introduced without DCT.

Are there any BMW models still available with DCT? Yes, but only the front-wheel-drive models, including the 1 Series, 2 Series Gran Coupé, and 2 Series Active Tourer. Notably, this excludes the 128ti, M135i, and M235i. In other words, no DCT-equipped sporty BMW models are available.

This trend is set to continue, according to Dirk Hacker, Head of Development at BMW M., It's not merely our opinion but a statement from Hacker himself. He recently revealed to the esteemed British Top Gear publication that DCT transmissions are now a thing of the past for BMW M. The future lies in manual and automatic transmissions, mainly electrified automatics.

Naturally, one wonders what led to this decision. Hacker explains that cost and comfort were key factors. A traditional automatic transmission offers improved manoeuvrability and parking convenience—an essential consideration for any M vehicle.

It's worth noting that the upcoming BMW M models, including the highly anticipated new M5, will not be equipped with DCT. This trend will persist in the future as well. While BMW hasn't bid farewell to manual gearboxes just yet, the days of this option are undoubtedly numbered. The current M2 still provides the choice of a manual gearbox, but it will be the final new M model to offer this feature.

By moving away from DCT, BMW M is signalling a new era in transmission technology, prioritizing efficiency and convenience without compromising on the exhilaration that defines their iconic M lineup.
