Yamaha XMax 300 Tech Max: The Ultimate Technological Max
New Sharper and More Sporty Design, Garmin Navigation, but still remains invariably an X Max and that is a good thing: Yamaha Adds Innovations to Its Mid-Range Model While Maintaining the Sporty Feel Suitable for Both City and Rural Routes.
Since its launch in 2006, the Yamaha XMax has always stood out in the scooter world by introducing a sporty category in its mid-range models and continuously updating itself in terms of technology and style. Sales figures demonstrate Yamaha's dedication, with thousands of units of the XMax model already sold in Europe.
In 2023, XMax returns with updates designed to make its design even more dynamic and introduces a new connectivity system with Garmin navigation in the top-of-the-line Tech Max version. I had the opportunity to test this version, starting from the city streets and rural backs street, allowing me to evaluate both the navigation system and the scooter as a whole.

Modernized Design
Let's start with the design. In this version, the sporty style of the XMax is even more pronounced, with a compact front body characterized by sharp, angular lines that give it a decisive and futuristic appearance. Completing the picture is the new optical group that forms a cross in front of the scooter, enhancing the overall sense of agility along with the shape of the fairing. The turn signals have also been redesigned and are now more visible compared to the previous model, mounted near the windshield.
The classic boomerang design continues at the rear, which in this new version features a more defined profile and a smaller LED taillight.

Technical Specifications
The technical specifications remain unchanged. The XMax 300 Tech Max still features the EURO 5-compliant single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 292cc, delivering 28 horsepower at 7,250 RPM and 29 Nm of torque at 5,750 RPM. The combination that has always made the XMax a true sporty scooter in its category is the suspension setup, with a telescopic fork providing 110mm of travel at the front and a twin shock absorber system with 95mm of travel at the rear. The wheels strike a balance between those of a high-wheel scooter and the more robust ones found on highway cruisers, with tire dimensions of 120/70-15 at the front and 140/70-14 at the rear.
The seat has been redesigned for a more comfortable riding position. It remains at a height of 795mm, but now it is easier to place your feet on the ground, providing better support in the city and comfort during longer rides. In the Tech Max version, the seat is particularly luxurious, featuring additional padding that enhances the overall quality and comfort.
The spacious dimensions also offer ample room for the passenger, who can hold onto the large rear handles. However, the presence of the plastic Yamaha logo, while visually appealing, can be a bit bothersome for the passenger on uneven or bumpy roads.
Underneath the seat, there is an XL-sized storage compartment capable of accommodating two full-face helmets without the need to stack them. Continuing with practicality, there are two additional storage compartments behind the shield, one of which is equipped with a lock that can be opened via an electric button, along with a USB port.

Even More Tech Features
The display has also been upgraded with a dual-screen setup. One screen is dedicated to the 3.2" LCD instrument panel, while the other is a 4.2" TFT screen used for navigation and smartphone communication. The black-and-white theme of the trip data on the LCD panel provides excellent contrast, ensuring legibility even in bright conditions. However, due to their size, some of the smaller data points may be less easily readable. Additionally, with the MyRide Yamaha app on your smartphone, you can connect to the scooter to view the phone's battery status, connection status, time, incoming calls, missed calls, and received messages. The app also stores XMax's data and its location.
Despite its compact size, the navigation screen is clear and intuitive. Setting the destination still requires action on the phone, unless you have saved preferred destinations directly in the system. Overall, the navigation system works well and is visually appealing. However, it's worth noting that Garmin navigation requires a subscription, similar to the TMax model.
The XMax features the classic Yamaha smart key, and the mechanical ignition is controlled by a switch located on the rear shield. One notable improvement is the enhanced braking sensitivity in the new XMax 300, which still utilizes the dual 267mm front discs. In the Tech Max version, the brake levers are now adjustable.

The Test Ride
As I hop on the XMax 300 Tech Max, I immediately feel a great sense of comfort. The seating position is shifted forward, with an upright posture and relaxed shoulders, thanks to the low-positioned handlebars. The footrests, covered with aluminum plates, offer ample space for repositioning, but they might feel a bit narrow, requiring a tighter stance.
From the first few kilometers, I feel at ease. The XMax 300 Tech Max proves to be agile and responsive in the city, with its slim profile allowing easy maneuvering through traffic. The adequately thick tires provide secure handling, allowing precise control of the scooter in curves. The Yamaha engine delivers its trademark spirited performance with zero vibrations, accompanied by a smooth transmission that provides excellent acceleration from a standstill and maintains speed effortlessly. If you happen to be a bit too enthusiastic with the throttle, the switchable traction control promptly intervenes.
The suspension system is well-balanced. It offers sufficient firmness to maintain the scooter's sporty characteristics, while the fork and shock absorbers effectively absorb bumps and rough road surfaces.
The braking system is excellent, utilizing hydraulic dual discs with a diameter of 267mm at the front and 245mm at the rear. This setup ensures excellent modulation at low speeds and provides ample stopping power when needed. The ABS system only engages when necessary.

Excitement Beyond the City Limits
Once I venture outside the city, the XMax reveals its sporty nature, allowing for motorcycle-like riding with precise cornering and a consistently high level of confidence. Thanks to a well-proportioned windscreen, the aerodynamic protection remains effective even at higher speeds. Moreover, the windscreen is height-adjustable with the help of tools.
On the motorway, cruising speeds of around 120 km/h are comfortable, with the potential to reach up to 130 km/h. However, wind resistance may have some impact. For longer journeys or commutes covering around 40-50 km, the seat may become somewhat uncomfortable. Nevertheless, the XMax 300 is suitable for commuters traveling to work.
Let's talk about fuel efficiency: The XMax 300 continues to impress in this regard, achieving approximately 28 km per liter in mixed riding conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 13 liters, it offers a maximum range of over 350 km.
