Kia EV9 Review: Revolutionizing the Electric SUV Landscape

Kia has once again raised the bar in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its latest offering, the Kia EV9. Priced at €68,000, this seven-seater SUV is not only a statement of luxury but also a game-changer in the fight against air pollution and climate change. While large SUVs have often been criticized for their powerful engines and high CO2 emissions, the EV9 shatters those notions by boasting a battery-electric powertrain that emits zero toxic particles or greenhouse gases.

In the race for electric SUV dominance, Kia has taken a significant lead over well-known rivals such as Volvo, Land Rover, Porsche, and even its parent company, Hyundai. With the arrival of the EV9, the SUV landscape is about to undergo a transformative shift.

But what truly sets the EV9 apart is not just its eco-friendly credentials; it's also an outstanding car in its own right. Kia's A-team has poured their expertise into crafting a durable and versatile machine that showcases the brand's Opposites United design philosophy. From the precise edges meeting full forms to the meticulous attention to detail in the switchgear, graphics, screen layouts, and door coverings, the EV9 exudes quality and thoughtful product design.

One of the standout features of this family-oriented SUV is the exceptional configurability of its seats. You have the choice between a six- or seven-seat model, with the latter allowing the middle row to be transformed into either a three-person bench or two individual seats. The swiveling seats in the EV9 create a unique meeting room-like space in the rear, making efficient use of the SUV's ample interior.

Comfort and convenience abound in the EV9's spacious cabin, with connectivity ports, storage bins, air vents, and controls thoughtfully integrated. The front passenger's seat and the middle-row pair come with "extreme comfort" settings reminiscent of airline seats, further enhancing the driving experience. Kia's attention to detail and durability shines through, setting the EV9 apart from its rivals.

The exterior design of the EV9 is both fresh and captivating. With its edgy treatment, modern plain front panel, technical-looking headlights, and sleek cladding along the body sides, the EV9 stands out as a distinctive and alluring presence on the road. While it maintains its large and boxy SUV proportions, it manages to captivate without being overly ostentatious.

Underneath its striking exterior, the EV9 shares the Hyundai Group's EV-specific Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with its two-year-old sibling, the Kia EV6. This platform provides a solid foundation for the EV9's all-independent multi-link suspension and various powertrain components. Buyers can choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions of the EV9, each offering unique driving experiences.

The entry-level models feature a 200bhp motor that delivers 258lb ft of torque exclusively to the rear axle, enabling 0-62mph acceleration in just 9.4 seconds. The four-wheel drive variant boasts a pair of motors, each with 189bhp, positioned at the front and rear. This configuration provides a combined power output of 378bhp and a swift 0-62mph time of 6.0 seconds. With an impressive torque of 442 lb-ft, which can be further boosted to 515 lb-ft with an optional software update, the EV9 delivers exhilarating performance.

Despite its EV nature, the EV9's controls feel familiar and easy to navigate. The quiet motor and impressive range of nearly 300 miles, depending on driving style, make for an enjoyable and seamless driving experience. The EV9's regenerative braking can be adjusted using steering wheel paddles to provide drivers with personalized control. Kia's commitment to user experience is evident in the EV9's intuitive design and frictionless operation, reminiscent of luxury brands like BMW and Porsche.

Ride comfort is a paramount consideration for any SUV, and the EV9 delivers a commendable experience. During a test drive covering approximately 300 miles, the EV9 showcased its supple suspension and quiet cabin on various road conditions. However, the true test of its ability to handle urban bumps and challenges will come when it tackles the streets of cities like London. Kia has put considerable effort into ensuring the EV9 meets the demands of discerning drivers, and early signs indicate its success.

While Kia is still evaluating export opportunities for the EV9, the strong demand in its home market means precise details for the European market are yet to be confirmed. However, it is anticipated that the EV9 will enter the European market with an estimated starting price of €68,000 for the well-equipped entry-level variant, with the top-of-the-range 4x4 GT-Line commanding around €78,000 for its opulent features and performance.

As for the eagerly awaited release date, it is expected that the first batch of EV9 vehicles will arrive in the hands of owners by November. Kia will soon provide more information regarding availability and delivery.
