Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Electrifies the Goodwood Festival of Speed with its Thrilling Performance and Innovative Features
Excitement filled the air at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed as Hyundai unveiled the highly anticipated Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. Marking the first high-performance electrified model from Hyundai's N sub-brand, the Ioniq 5 N sets the stage for a thrilling new era of electric vehicles (EVs) with its impressive power output and cutting-edge technologies. This electric powerhouse is just the beginning of Hyundai's electrification strategy, with more exciting EVs to come under the N sub-brand.
Under the sleek and aerodynamic exterior of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N lies a dual-motor setup that delivers an astonishing 600 horsepower and 545 pound-feet of torque. And if that's not enough to get your heart racing, engage the N Grin Boost function for an exhilarating burst of power, increasing the output to an astonishing 641 horsepower and 567 pound-feet of torque for a thrilling 10 seconds. The all-wheel-drive powertrain propels the Ioniq 5 N from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds, or a blistering 3.4 seconds with N Grin Boost engaged, allowing drivers to experience true sports car acceleration. With a top speed of 161 mph, the Ioniq 5 N is ready to conquer the racetrack and leave a lasting impression.
To ensure the Ioniq 5 N can keep up with its impressive performance, Hyundai equips it with an 84.0-kilowatt hour battery, the highest capacity available for this model. Thanks to its 800-volt technology, the Ioniq 5 N features ultra-fast charging capabilities, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in a mere 18 minutes. But that's not all. Hyundai's N Battery Pre-conditioning allows drivers to optimize the battery's performance, with the option to choose between a Drag mode or a Track mode. The Track mode optimizes the battery temperature for extended laps on the track, while the Drag mode provides a burst of total power for those intense sprints. These advanced features enhance the overall driving experience, both on public roads and on the track.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N isn't just about raw power; it's also packed with innovative software tricks designed to enhance the driving experience. With the N Race feature, drivers gain even more control over the car's energy usage. Endurance mode maximizes the on-track range by limiting the peak power output, while Sprint mode prioritizes full power output for those adrenaline-fueled moments. The N Launch Control feature provides three different traction levels, enabling the car to deliver lightning-fast starts and maximum acceleration.
Addressing the weight of the Ioniq 5 N, Hyundai has employed a range of techniques to counterbalance the added heft. The N Brake Regen system serves as the primary braking force, with mechanical brakes supplementing as needed, particularly during intense track driving. With the regenerative braking system capable of delivering up to 0.6 G of deceleration force, the Ioniq 5 N ensures responsive and precise braking performance. Hyundai's commitment to lightweight construction is evident in the use of new materials and hybrid construction for the brakes, resulting in the company's strongest brakes ever.
But the innovation doesn't stop there. Hyundai has developed the N Pedal software to optimize the car's cornering capability. By increasing the regenerative braking force, the software creates a weight transfer that improves the car's ability to navigate corners with ease, providing instant turn-in and enhanced handling. In addition, the N Drift Optimizer system takes driving pleasure to new heights, managing multiple vehicle systems to maintain a drift angle. For drivers who crave even more excitement, the Torque Kick Drift function simulates the clutch kick action found in rear-wheel-drive vehicles, adding an extra element of thrill to the driving experience. With N Torque Distribution offering up to 11 levels of adjustability and an electronic limited-slip differential, the Ioniq 5 N provides unparalleled control and agility on the road.
Hyundai understands that the driving experience is not just about performance but also about engaging the senses. That's why they have introduced the N e-shift and N Active Sound + systems in the Ioniq 5 N. The N e-shift system simulates the feeling of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, providing a seamless and dynamic driving experience. Complementing this feature, the N Active Sound + system offers three distinct sound themes to immerse drivers in the thrill of the ride. From the roaring sound of Hyundai N's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine in the Ignition theme to the futuristic and captivating Supersonic theme inspired by a twin-engine fighter jet, these simulated sounds and shifts keep drivers connected and informed about the car's performance.
Not only does the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N deliver exceptional performance and innovative features, but it also boasts a sporty and dynamic design. The N variant is wider and longer than the standard model, showcasing a more aggressive stance on the road. With its lower bumper lip spoiler, active air flaps, and functional mesh air curtain, the Ioniq 5 N combines form and function for optimized aerodynamics. Accentuating the sleek design, Hyundai adds N-exclusive Luminous Orange accents on the bumper, side skirts, and rear diffuser, contrasting beautifully with the black trim. The 21-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero tires tuned for the EV further enhance the car's athletic appearance.
Stepping inside the Ioniq 5 N, drivers will find themselves surrounded by a driver-focused interior that combines comfort and performance. Hyundai introduces the newly designed N steering wheel, adorned with the N performance brand's logo for the first time, giving drivers a sense of exclusivity and pride. Equipped with four buttons, including Drive Mode Select, N Grin Boost, and two N Custom buttons, the steering wheel allows drivers to customize their drive modes and preferences. Paddles for the e-shift and N Pedal functions are conveniently positioned behind the wheel for effortless control. To maximize driver comfort, Hyundai has added a knee pad and shin support on the reinforced center console, along with a sliding armrest. The bolstered seats are positioned lower for a sportier driving position and are available in a pixel pattern, offered in cloth-and-leather or eco-Alcantara-and-leather combinations.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is available in a range of striking colors, including two exclusive hues, N Performance Blue Matte and N Performance Blue, that add a touch of uniqueness to the model. Other color options include Abyss Black Pearl, Cyber Gray Metallic, Ecotronic Gray Matte, Ecotronic Gray, Atlas White, Atlas White Matte, Gravity Gold Matte, and Soultronic Orange Pearl. The interior is elegantly designed in black, accentuated with Performance Blue accents for a sporty and cohesive look.
While Hyundai has yet to announce the price of the Ioniq 5 N, it is expected to exceed the starting price of the top Limited trim, which is priced at €58,000. The company has not revealed the exact on-sale date but anticipates a release in the near future, possibly next year. More information about the Ioniq 5 N's range, pricing, and availability will be unveiled by Hyundai
